The Babadook later possess Amelia while she denies the monster’s existence and by extension her own grief. She spent the past seven years denying her grief until Samuel found a children’s book about a monster called the Babadook. Amelia, herself is overcome with grief over the loss of her husband as he died in a car crash while she was giving birth to Samuel. Samuel causes concern among the teachers at his school by brining weapons and seeing monsters. The Babadook is about a widow named Amelia who experiences difficulties in taking care of her child Samuel. It is portrayed in a sympathetic plight and provides an alternative perspective to those issues as opposed to the pessimism displayed in mainstream horror films. The Australian- Phycological Horror film The Babadook directed by Jennifer Kent looks at the horrors of motherhood and the fear of grief and mental illness. With the rise of a global market, filmmakers from around the world have the opportunity to express their individual or cultural anxiety. Many previous American- Horror films depicted motherhood as either a factor in the monster’s origins or as an indelible role that women were assigned to in films such as Rosemary’s Baby. ![]() In many slasher films for instance, the monster had a past with their mother, being Jason Voorhees or Norman Bates. In past horror films, the female has been the object of fears and anxieties.
